Bruce and I hiked to the peak of Sassafras Mountain this afternoon. At a whopping 3533 feet, it is the highest point in South Carolina. USGS maps put it at 3560 feet, but a recent South Carolina Geological Survey assessment downgraded to 3533 feet, mostly due to grading for a cell phone tower that lowered the natural height. That still puts it at least 50' higher than nearby Hickerynut Mountain (3,483'). Actually, Sassafras Mountain is lucky to get any recognition at all. Even though it it is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the Appalachian Mountains, it is right on the southern end of the range, and right on the border of North Carolina. From the top we could look north towards the 6,000' peaks in North Carolina's portion of the Blue Ridge Ranges.
