Island Artist Gallery Reception 5_21_11

CC by her art ( on my right)
Island Artist Gallery held a reception for all its artist on Saturday evening.
We had a great turnout of both guests and artists.
Great turnout!
The camaraderie between artists was great.
It was fun to talk about our art and explain how we work and what inspires us.
Its also a great place to learn the latest buzz.
Have you heard.....
And of course we had to check out the competition.
I wonder how the artist did that...
Where are all the guys you ask
Most were hanging out by the food and beverage tables, of course.
BJ accompanied me to the reception

Visiting with the neighbors: Racoon Moved In 5 '11

We have a new neighbor who is setting up household in the Juniper tree behind out house.
She's a cheeky one.  Large and healthy and with no fear of humans at all.
Kat had best keep her distance

Pawleys Pavillion Reunion 5 '11

The Pawleys Pavilion shown in the artist rendition above is believed to have been the last of four pavilions that provided beach-style entertainment to islanders and summer visitors dating back to the 1920a.  The wooden pavilion was built in the sand dunes just north of the South Causeway leading to the Island.  The last  of the Pawleys Pavilions  was constructed on t in 1960 with a s wooden floor for dancing, bandstand, jukebox, booths, benches and wooden bar.  Parents and grandparents vacationing on Pawleys Island wanted a place for young people to go to and enjoy themselves in a safe atmosphere without having to venture out on the highway. And, the Pavilion was a safe haven for this young crowd.  Well know bands of the time  were brought in to provide live entertainment for young vacationers from all over the South.  Unfortunately an arsonist burned down the Pavilion in the 1970s . But many had fond memories of the popular pavilion.    and community support for a once a year reunion was strong.   Reunion-goers have increased each year since  May of 1998 when  the first reunion was held.   So now the single night event brings both  young and old together to dance under the stars.

This years Reunion served a double purpose as it not only preserved a bit of  the Pawleys Island history,  but served  as a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser  to help those in need of housing in the greater Georgetown County community

Volunteers came in the afternoon,  to set up the dance floor, and picnic tables.

Hog Heaven serves the best fried chicken in the South Carolina
  Local merchants brought in food

Hansa House is a favorite for southern style home cooking and fresh seafood
And then the people started coming.  Many were dressed to the hilt in party outfits

and they just kept coming,  and coming, until the dance floor was packed.

I took tickets at the gate, and Bruce played Bartender.

And of course there was plenty of security to make sure everyone was safe.

Whether  you were fortunate to have danced at the  original pavilion,   or this was your  first  reunion, it was surely a night to remember!
