PI Beach Walk: 10 '21

It was a beautiful day for a walk on the south end

 of Pawleys Island Beach.   

The sky was brilliant ( but awfully hard on the eyes).

 Pawleys' Island beach was so busy yesterday at 1 pm that we couldn't find parking anywhere on the island. Even the handicap slots were filled. So we got there at 9am this morning. Lots still had open parking slots, we were able to find handicapped parking so Bruce was happy.

The beach was empty enough and the shore solid enough that we could safely take a long stroll to the North end.

Once there, Bruce promptly set about making new friends,

and practicing writing in Hebrew.

(That ought to confuse a few beach goers.)

Bruce was horrified when he got home and realized that a random pre-existing scratch in the sand had added an extra vowel to his "shalom".

But I was totally impressed.

His handwriting in Hebrew is more legible

than when he is writing in English.

Pawley's Island Beach Walk: 1 '21

  There isn't a cloud in the sky and the sun is out.

We decided  it would be a good day to take a walk on the beach, before any winter weather sets in again, so we set off for the North-end of Pawleys Island's Beach

The ocean was a bit turbulent, and the wind sharp,  but it wasn't crowded.

We were quite shocked by how much beach erosion had occurred since we last visited this end of Pawleys Island.  That big circle of water in the foreground of the photo above used to be all sandy beach.

And the channel between Pawleys  Island and Litchfield Island has widened so that its edges almost reach the homes on the ends of each island. This photo was taken at low tide. In the past, we used to be able to walk across this channel at low tide;  I doubt that that is possible anymore. 

Some of that sand washed directly offshore, where it is causing rougher wave action than we've ever seen.

Can you feel that riptide pulling you into the Atlantic?

Even the surfers were staying out of the water today.

All the more room for us to roam the beach without having to wear a COVID mask, or make wide detours to aid contact with strangers.

The rain stopped long enough today to allow us to take our 'First of the Year' beach walk on Pawleys Island.

It was gray, and a little windy, but not too cold, 

and,  we pretty much had the whole South end of the island to ourselves.

December 31st Beach Walk 12 '20

Ever since we moved to Pawleys's Island  

Bruce and I have made it a tradition to visit Pawleys Island Beach 

on the last and the first day of each year.

Most years, we take a long walk along the shoreline,

but today it's been raining hard all morning. 

 We counted ourselves lucky to catch a short break in the clouds

 which allowed us enough time to dash to the beach.

It was obvious from the dark clouds 

which were closing in from the west of us

that there wouldn't be enough time for us to take a walk on the beach 

this year.

And judging by the height of the tide on the marsh,

if we lingered too long,

we might even be at risk of  the high tide flooding the streets

 leaving us stuck on the island

until the tide receded.

 

So we contented ourselves 

with watching the

glow on the marsh magically change,

as the sun slipped in and out of the clouds.

By the time we got home, it was pouring again.  

We'll try again tomorrow to take a beach walk,

 but the next several days are predicted to have a high probability of precipitation, so we probably won't get to take our first 2021 beach walk

 until Monday, Jan 4, 2021, or later.

PI South End Beach Walk: 10 '20

We've been having perfect weather for walking the beach.

Not only do we have the place almost to ourselves,

but the sky is a deep clear blue,

the air temp is comfortable ,

and the shoreline water

on the South-end of Pawleys Island

is refreshingly cool.

Nice Day for a walk on Pawleys Island beach. Not too hot, and not too cold, with plenty of room for social distancing. BJ even had his own island all to himself. LOL..

It was a beautiful day for a walk on the newly refurbished

Pawleys Island Beach

And they've protected the dunes with fencing

 and  widened the South end to extend the  beach 

Stormy Day 4"20

We woke up this morning to thunder, lightening and

zero visibility rainfall.

It sounds like the world is coming to an end  again

but then again we have a tin roof on our house and even a drizzle sounds like

a hurricane is pounding us.

I tried to turn on the weather channel,  but the TV wouldn't turn on.  

( Damn remote is broken

 and Spectrum is taking their time getting us a new one)

So I  dialed into our Myrtle Beach live news station on my PC.

It turns out that the storm we were expecting yesterday

  has finally arrived complete with tornado warnings .

Unfortunately this station is not as helpful as we would like.

Their  Weather Doppler Station is located in North Carolina (about 50 miles North of us), 

and  some dense tall trees on a neighbors property

 just to the South of that station

are blocking their signal from reaching Pawleys Island.  

The only thing the station's newscaster can tell us about our area is

 that conditions are ripe for a tornado  touching down.  

(Right now that threat seems to be  about 5 miles to the North of us 

and moving in our direction).

 Due to the low visibility  the road conditions are hazardous.  

We are being advised to stay indoors and away from windows. 

Needless to say there will be no COVID emergency meal kits  delivered into the area today;

So this weather-maker  is imposing some very real hardships

 on some of our communities' low income families.

Pawleys Island Beach Walk: 2 '20

We took a walk on the North end of Pawleys Island today.

It was really beautiful, but also really  cold 

 So  cold that there wasn't anyone but  us and the birds on the beach.

Still it was nice to get out of the house for awhile.

Chirstmas Eve PI Beach Walk: 12 '19

We've been pinned down in the house for most of the past week by a series of rain storms, so when we woke to sunshine today, we decided to take advantage of it and go for a walk on the beach.

On the down side it was a bit tough  go getting there.  

The storms had  eroded away the dunes

and deposited the sand from the dunes in new places which buried a lot of the  entrances .

And there were new tidepools blocking  access the north end of the beach

Plus, a cold wind was whipping us with  lot of sand.

But, on the plus side, we had the beach to ourselves, and it was breathtakingly beautiful.  We were glad we made the effort.

This is a great drone's view of the creekside aftermath of Dorian on Pawleys Island starting from the north end of Pawleys Island down to the south end where it narrows to one street width. BTW scene 2:20 / 4:12 the camera is looking straight at the Pawleys Plantation causeway ( the long boardwalk through the marsh which leads to the island green at fairway 13). The causeway points directly to the end of our street with our home just behind the trees at the top of the scene. That should give you a good idea of why we watch the tidal flooding warnings so carefully.

Browsing the Hammock Shops 7 '19

We had a nice time this afternoon browsing all the little specialty shops in the Hammock Shop Complex.  It had been a while since we had visited these stores. We were pleased to see that our favorite Eastern European wine import shop had upgraded their services to include sit down lunch menu offerings.  We'll be sure to come back hungry the next time we plan to visit them.

Pawley's Road Hazards: 5'19

Some folks worry about  deer  unexpectedly crossing the street in front of their car in wooded areas.

Here in Pawleys Plantation, we have to contend with a  different kind of wildlife hazard.

Big Al decided to cross the main street  into the plantation directly in front of us at high noon

 stopping traffic in both directions.

Apparently, he thought the fish in the retaining pond on the north side of Pawleys Plantation Way, might taste better today,  than the fish in the pond on the south side of  PP Way.

Needless to say, we don't go out for walks after dark.
