New Development

The surveyors have been out in the woods behind us all week marking off the lots for the new development.

We got some really good news yesterday  which I shared
 with our neighbor across the street
When we got up this morning we  found these tied to our street lamp .
We are so fortunate to  have such a thoughtful neighbor.

Ladybug Golf Balls: 1 ' 20

Bruce spotted a ladybug painted onto a golf ball  on one of  the craft blogs I follow.

 He decided that they might make cool gifts for some of our friends.  

              

He set to work on painting some of his older practice balls.  Soon he had  made enough for  both our golfing and our gardening friends ( plus a half dozen for us) .  Then he scattered them in random and unexpected places around their yards.

Hopefully they won't try to play golf with them.

This is a great drone's view of the creekside aftermath of Dorian on Pawleys Island starting from the north end of Pawleys Island down to the south end where it narrows to one street width. BTW scene 2:20 / 4:12 the camera is looking straight at the Pawleys Plantation causeway ( the long boardwalk through the marsh which leads to the island green at fairway 13). The causeway points directly to the end of our street with our home just behind the trees at the top of the scene. That should give you a good idea of why we watch the tidal flooding warnings so carefully.

3:30 pm Dorian Update: 9 '19

The center of Dorian is currently about 100 miles South of us -  approximately even with Jacksonville, Florida.  She is still a Cat II with 105 mph winds at the center and is moving north along the coast at 8 mph.  We are expecting the heaviest rain and winds to hit our area around midnight, and stay with us all through tomorrow (Thursday).  Even so, we are already getting some pounding bands of rain in our area.  As you can see from the forecast, the eye is likely to pass very close to our home so things are going to get worse for the next 24 to 48 hours before they get better.  By Friday,  Dorian will have moved on to North Carolina and the Outer Banks. 

HOA Deck Repair Complete: 8 '19

The HOA construction crew began working on refurbishing

 our upstairs deck on Monday, 8/26.

First,  they removed the railings.  They left the upright  posts in place

 and stored the railings in the flowerbed below our unit's deck.

Next, they removed all of the original deck floorboards and lateral supports.

 After getting the deck cleared down to the original waterproof layer,

they added a new layer of rubberized waterproofing over the older material,

and they installed new aluminum flashing and sealed all the edges.

Then, the new pressure-treated wood floorboards were installed.

Finally, the original railings were put back in place. 

The entire job was completed in two days

 and the deck looks better than it did when the place was brand new.

The great thing about senior golf games: 8 '19

Bruce played a solo round of 18 holes on our home course today! 

 He was pretty well wiped out for the rest of the day after completing the game.

But the main take-away is that he had the endurance to play the entire course on a hot and muggy day. He even par-ed several of the harder holes on the course.

So It's National Golfers Day. Get out there a cuss at a small inanimate object.

Baby It's cold outside: 12 '18

Oh, My.  We had a very early hard frost last night. (first of the winter season). I was supposed to start on decorating the outside back yards today ( or at least the deck and back porch),  but everything is frozen solid.  Even the birdbath.

If I try to  touch any of my plants right now, I will damage the foliage, not to mention risking frost bite because I don't own any winter clothing. 

So  I focused  my attention today upon lighting up the inside of the Carolina Room (which is indoors but visible from the  outside) with icicles lights and snowflakes.

Neighborhood Holiday Decor Competition 12 18

Time's are a changing.

This year has seen several new people move onto the street. AND, one of the HOA Board member's has her family spending Christmas with here in South Carolina.  The visiting relatives brought with them early Christmas gifts of lighted  yard ornaments.

As soon as the board members lights went up, the newbies began decorating their front and back yards  as well.

There are now 6' snowmen  street side

along with  golfing pink flamingos

  and with life size alligators 

swallowing Santa by the golf course.

Bruce calls it the Christmas decorating competition. That may be true, but I love it. It feels like a fresh breeze has swept through this rather stodgy neighborhood leaving a most welcome bit of whimsy and fun in its place.

Visiting with the neighbors, Turkeys: 12 '18

Bruce always said, 'some of our neighbors are real turkeys'.

Now he has proof. 

They are trotting right down the center of the street. 

I guess they figured Thanksgiving was over,

 so it was safe to go public.

There goes the Woods :11 '18

Some of you may remember  a post*  I put out last September about how development had started  gnawing away at the woods behind us.  At the time we did not know why the builder was removing trees and clearing just a narrow strip  just around their property line.

 After weeks of watching, we are near certain that this is 'Phase One' of  the developer putting in a drainage system.

Our unit in the Masters Place sits at 13 feet above sea level, but  the land behind us drops away steeply and faces a  tidal estuary, hence  a good drainage system is critical to keeping  any development  on that property from flooding.

Post Michael Report: 10'18

We were lucky yesterday here on Pawleys Island.  We had no structural damage, and not even a single brown-out on our electrical system.  Others were not so lucky.  Today we are seeing power outages across large swathes of  South Carolina as the result of Michael's wind and rain. Trees are down on power lines. Trees are down on roads, 

and it is taking forever to get anywhere.

Guess what showed up in the woods behind us this morning.

The following set of pictures taken progressively over the course of the day say it all.

We still don't know why they are taking down the trees closest to us, 

while leaving all the others on their land, but I guess we will soon find out.

Damage Assessment = Nill: 9'18

As soon as the car was unloaded, I made a quick checkup of the areas immediately surrounding our home. As these Before ( 9/11/18) and after ( 9/17/18) photos show, there was no noticeable damage to anything in the neighborhood ( other than our Zinnias).
